Red Dog Barn is our little bit of Texas at the edge of the Piney Woods north of Houston. Rona grew up in West Africa where she and her family rode, owned and raced Arab/Barb horses at the edge of the Sahara Desert. Dave had hardly ridden before he got his first horse at age 54. His first experience with a mule was on a party ride in Mexico where he thought his 'horse' had rather long ears!
We are not experts about much of anything - certainly not horses and mules, but we love our equines and try to learn all we can about these wonderful creatures. Currently we own Peruvian Horses and a gaited mule, and have had Paso Fino horses. Since moving to Magnolia in 1992, we have had the privilege to meet many friendly and knowledgeable people in the Texas horse world who continue to help and instruct us.
The Peruvian [Paso], Paso Fino and Dave's Missouri Fox Trotter mule are three of several gaited breeds. The Tennessee Walker is another example. Mules can inherit a gait from their parents. Gait means a way of going and is defined by the sequence of footfalls. The walk is a gait that is common to all horses. A 'gaited' horse is generally one that does not trot, but exhibits a variety of footfalls that produce a comfortable, smooth ride without the concussion of trotting. These horses were bred for traveling under saddle and this has been their use for centuries.
While many gaited horses are shown or exhibited, we prefer to trail ride and camp out in our horse trailer. We enjoy attending shows and training clinics, but spend a lot of time training and maintaining our little herd.
Red Dog Barn on the Web is our way of sharing the joy that gaited horses and mules give and the experience that we have gained from our equine and human friends. We encourage those of you who do not know about gaited breeds to learn and hope that you will soon have the opportunity to experience the smooth ride of a gaited horse or mule.
The Barn can help find an owner or breeder of gaited horses or mules near you that would be happy to show you their animals. If you are looking for an experienced pleasure horse or saddle mule, we may know where there is just the right one for you. Check out our Horse Trader's Corral for available gaited horses and mules or e-mail us your special requirements.
Yes, two red, long-haired Dachshunds live at the Barn!
